Successful
Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Regional Conference
Boston, MA February 12th, 2005
This
year’s YJA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference
was a huge success! About twenty JCGB pathshala
and college kids attended and participated. We were
honored to have speakers such as Lewis Randa, Yogendra
Jain, Nirav Shah, Paulomi Gudka, Parimal Pandya,
and Archit Shah. In the morning sessions, Yogendra,
Nirav and Parimal discussed “Reconciling and
Strengthening our Faith in Jainism” with a
great PowerPoint presentation. Then Paulomi, a young
Jain originally from Toronto with strong leadership
experience in YJA and YJP (Young Jains Professional)
conducted a session where she had attendees interactively
split up into groups and discuss different ways
to improve and use Jainism in our daily lives today
and for the future. Following these sessions we
enjoyed a wonderful lunch sponsored by Kalpana Vagadia,
Piyusha Shah and Harishita Shah. During lunch the
Boston Convention Committee (Shaan Zaveri, Ashil
Gosalia, Naman Jain, Sheetal Doshi, Tarang Gosalia)
presented their plans to the youth about getting
YJA 2006 to take place in Boston. After sharing
our ideas, we enjoyed a quick dessert and then took
a field trip to the Peace Abbey in Sherbourn.
The Peace Abbey is a center dedicated to the unity
of all world religions and promotion of non-violence
and peace. Lewis Randa, a schoolteacher for the
disabled, founded the Abbey in 1971. At our visit,
Mr. Randa gave us a tour of the many facilities
around the Abbey. He showed us the pacifist memorial
surrounding the Gandhi Statue in the front yard.
The memorial included quotations and peace prayers
from several different religions and worldwide peace
leaders. Furthermore, we visited The Peace Abbey
Chapel which offered a sacred environment of icons,
symbols, scriptures and sculptures of the twelve
major worldwide religions. Outside the Abbey was
a barn of cows, sheep, pigs, and goats. We got to
pet the gentle animals and see how happy they were
to be living safely and free from the nearby slaughterhouse.
We concluded our visit by reciting the twelve major
peace prayers and listening to how Jainism has been
a great inspiration for Mr. Randa’s peace
and non-violent movement. As Jains, we should all
visit this wonderful place that preaches non-violence.
If you have not yet been to the Peace Abbey, we
all deeply encourage you to do so as soon as possible;
“It was one of the most peaceful places I
have ever been to,” said Naman Jain. After
dinner at the Peace Abbey, the participants went
for some bowling! The day was filled with loads
of fun, discussion, learning, understanding and
appreciation.
