Habitat
For Humanity
On October 1st,
2005, the Southeast Region hosted Habitat For Humanity
in Atlanta, GA. Over 20 attendees came together at
8 in the morning near Hartsfield International Airport
to help build the framework for a house that had just
been started only a week before. Attendees enjoyed
learning new tasks such as hammering walls together,
operating power tools, and building doors. Each attendee
left feeling that they had given back to a community
that had given so much to them, "I learned how
hard it is to be a builder and how much you can accomplish
when you work with other people." - Saumya Dave.
Jain
Center of Greater Atlanta Lock-In
The Jain Society of Greater Atlanta held a
Lock- In on March 12th and March 13th. Approximately
25 youth participated in this event. Parin Chheda
proposed the idea for the Lock- In and Vijay Palvia
organized the event. This event allowed Jain youth
in the area to get together and discuss ideas, learn
about Jainism, and have a fun experience as well.
The group initiated the event with icebreakers. Sessions
soon followed. Jain philosophy: universal gods, comparisons
of Arihantas and Siddhas, and personal views of what
a Jain God is was the first session of the Lock-In.
Youth shared their opinions and also learned about
the topic. The next session was Morals and Values,
which focused on dating, marriage, alcohol, eating
meat, being vegetarian, and living as a Jain youth.
Adults assisted with this session as well, shared
their viewpoints, and enlightened the youth. In addition,
they took part in the Jain Society’s weekly
Patshala class, memorizing Jain prayers. They concluded
the event with aarti and deevo. The youth participants
left the event with new ideas, knowledge, and aspirations.
